Gynecological Surgery

surgery

Gynecologic surgery is any operation performed on the female reproductive system, including the vulva, vagina, cervix, uterus, Fallopian tubes and ovaries.

Common Gynecologic Surgery

People associate “gynecology” with hysterectomy, the procedure that removes the uterus. However, this is a relatively uncommon in our practice. The scope of benign gynecology includes:

  • Myomectomy (removal of uterine fibroids)
  • Hysteroscopy (viewing inside the uterus)
  • Hysteroscopy with removal of polyps or fibroids
  • Cone biopsy or Loop electrode excision procedure (LEEP) for cervical pre-cancer
  • Laparoscopy (viewing inside the pelvis) for diagnosis and therapy
  • Endometrial ablation
  • Removal of Fallopian tubes or ovaries
  • Removal of ovarian cysts
  • Laparoscopic sterilization
  • Correction of congenital uterine anomalies (uterine septoplasty)

Reasons for Gynecologic Surgery

When conservative forms of treatment such as medication fail, certain patients may benefit from surgery that provides long-term, significant symptom relief. Women typically undergo gynecologic surgery as treatment for the following conditions:

  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Incontinence
  • Pelvic pain
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Endometriosis
  • Severe menstrual cramping
  • Fibroid tumors
  • Pressure on the bladder
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Discomfort during sexual intercourse

Although gynecologic surgery has traditionally involved large incisions and a lengthy recovery, innovations such as laparoscopy and hysteroscopy allow most gynecologic surgery to be performed in a minimally invasive manner. In laparoscopy, small instruments and tiny cameras are used thru quarter inch incisions, significantly reducing the recovery time and postoperative pain of traditional open surgery.
