Treatments for Male and Female Infertility

Fertility requires the correct function of complex systems in two people; infertility can arise in either partner or both, from minor dysfunction, major disease, or be without explanation. Modern medical technology provides infertile couples a range of treatment options, but these must be tailored to the specific situation; one size does *not* fit all. It is best to start by making an appointment with Dr. Howe to discuss the appropriate evaluation, to choose diagnostic testing and then to review your treatment options. We will speak honestly and openly about your diagnosis, prognosis and treatment options.

Couples often feel overwhelmed by the deeply personal issues involved in infertility. Such matters as time commitment, career goals, religious beliefs, cooperation between partners, medical diagnosis and emotional energy can come to the fore. We are here to help you sort through these issues.

Dr. Howe’s patients receive customized medical treatments in a caring and supportive environment. Most couples with infertility can be helped through conventional treatment. For those who are not, we are quick to initiate assisted reproduction (in vitro fertilization) or to recommend other choices. We collaborate routinely with the finest IVF program in New England, and have superior pregnancy rates.

Not all couples who suffer infertility will conceive. However, no woman or couple should accept involuntary childlessness; there are always more options to consider. By scheduling an appointment with Dr. Howe, you are giving yourself the best chance of receiving the expert care you need in addressing your specific infertility problem.

Our Approach

Approximately 1 in 7 couples are affected by infertility. Although there have been major advances in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility in recent years, the fact that it can be treated is not commonly known by everyone. Modern healthcare advancements provide infertile couples a range of treatment options. Nevertheless, couples often feel overwhelmed by issues such as time commitment, costs, insurance coverage, career goals, religious beliefs, cooperation between partners, medical diagnosis and emotional energy. Our staff is here to help you sort through these issues. It is best to start by making an appointment with Dr. Howe to discuss the appropriate diagnostic testing and various treatment options. Upon a diagnosis of infertility, Dr. Howe can assist you in deciding what treatment plan is best for you and your specific situation.

Many insurances, including state welfare plans, do not cover infertility consults and services. This includes surgery for reversals. As a result, if you are a patient who will self-pay for this consultation or services, or you have no insurance coverage for infertility, we now require a $200 downpayment prior to or at the time of your visit. This downpayment can be made to us by phone with your credit card prior to the visit, or with our receptionist when you come in for your scheduled appointment. If you decide to select an infertility package, this downpayment can be credited toward the package fee. We recommend that if you are not sure if you have coverage for the infertility consultation or services you are seeking, that you call your insurance company directly and ask if your plan covers the infertility consult or services you seek. Thank You”

Some diagnostic testing used to determine the cause of infertility may include:

  • Reproductive Hormone Tests
  • Basal Body Temperature Observations
  • Luteinizing Hormone Monitoring
  • PostCoital Test
  • Endometrial Biopsy
  • Semen Analysis
  • Cultures for Chlamydia and Mycoplasma
  • Immunologic Testing
  • Testing for Genetic Abnormalities

Dr. Howe’s patients can expect to receive customized medical treatments in a caring and supportive environment. Although procedures such as vitro fertilization can sometimes be the necessary treatment, most couples with infertility can be helped through conventional treatments such as hormone therapy. Board certified in both Ob/Gyn and Reproductive Endocrinology, Dr. Howe is the only certified Reproductive Endocrinologist practicing privately in Western Massachusetts.

Not all couples who explore infertility treatment will be able to conceive a child. By scheduling an appointment with Dr. Howe, you are giving yourself the best chance of receiving the expert care you need in addressing your specific infertility problem.
